The owner, Eddie Ruth, has worn many hats as a husband, father, and business owner. Eddie Ruth's story is one of perseverance and determination. As a product of segregated schools, he moved to York, Pennsylvania, in 1967 to look for better opportunities. After working multiple jobs, he saved enough money to start his own business. In 1972, Eddie opened his first clothing store in downtown York with just his personal savings. At the time, he saw a need for fashion merchandise, as many people were going out of town to buy clothes. So he found a store and sent his brother, Aiken, to New York to buy various styles of coordinated sets, top coats, and suits. Eddie's first clothing store was so successful that he over-bought and needed a bigger space. So he found a place to open a second outlet and continued to expand. In 1995, Eddie opened Heritage 313 Market, a unique African-American gift and clothing shop above Eddie's Men's Shop in downtown Harrisburg. The store was created to give business-minded people the opportunity to go into business with little investment. Today, Heritage 313 Market has added a shoe repair shop, and two other retailers will be joining soon. Eddie's Mens Store has become a staple in the Harrisburg area, offering everything a man needs to complete his wardrobe. Eddie makes buying trips to New York twice a month to keep up with the latest fashion trends. He enjoys the trips more when his sister, Shirley Carter of Shirley's Closet, joins him, giving them time to catch up on family news. Eddie's success is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and a strong sense of community. He is committed to downtown Harrisburg and sees its potential for growth.
