Last-Minute Summer Camps & Classes Around Harrisburg

We have officially reached the part of summer where the initial excitement wears off and the kids are looking for something new to do. If you need to fill a few gaps in your family schedule for July and August, you haven’t totally missed out.

A handful of fantastic Harrisburg spots still have active registration slots for upcoming weeks. Here is a quick guide to what is open right now, ranging from science and art studios to unique outdoor adventures.

For the Creative Visual Artists: Art Association of Harrisburg

If your kid prefers a traditional studio setting over a full-week camp, AAH runs excellent six-week class blocks that meet once a week. Their summer semester kicks off in mid-July, making it the perfect mid-summer reset.

• The Vibe: Classic studio art, small class sizes, and real technique.

• What’s open:

  • Art for Kids (Ages 5-9): Meets Saturdays from 10–11 AM starting July 18. It’s a hands-on, messy exploration of different mediums.

  • Youth Drawing & Painting (Ages 10-15): Meets Sundays from 2:30–4 PM starting June 28. Perfect for older kids looking to work on shading, perspective, and composition.

  • Advanced Youth Open Studio (Ages 11-15): An independent, collaborative space for older kids who want to create without rigid instruction.

For the Nature Explorers: Dauphin County Parks & Recreation

If you need to get the kids outside and away from screens, the county's outdoor programming is a hidden gem.

• The Vibe: Muddy boots, wildlife tracking, and fresh air.

• What’s open: They are currently booking their Junior Naturalist Day Camp weeks for the summer. It’s hands-on conservation and nature education right in our backyard. Slots go fast on these as the weeks approach, so you'll want to grab a spot immediately.

For the Young Scientists & Performers: Whitaker Center

Whitaker Center has a massive lineup of day camps running through early August for PreK all the way up to 12th grade. They do full-day and half-day options depending on age.

• The Vibe: High-energy science, tech, and theatre.

• What’s open:

  • Jr. STEAM Camps (PreK-K, Half-Day): Weekly themes like Rainforest Rangers and Superhero Science running all through July and into August.

  • STEAM & Innovation Camps (Grades 1-8, Full-Day): Kids can jump into coding, digital design, or physics challenges. (Note: The mid-August Minecraft/LEGO camps are waitlist-only, but the July weeks have open spots).

  • Musical Theatre Camps (Grades 3-12, Full-Day): They are running production weeks for Disney’s Frozen Kids and Shrek The Musical Jr. with final performances on Fridays.

For the River Explorers: The Pride of the Susquehanna "River School"

If you want a totally unique weekend activity, you can't beat a floating classroom right on the river. The Harrisburg Riverboat runs a Saturday morning "River School" specifically designed for young naturalists, scientists, and learners.

• The Vibe: Hands-on ecology, live wildlife encounters, and learning on the water.

• The Details: Classes start at 9:30 AM on Saturdays. It’s a 5-week rotating curriculum covering different facets of the river environment:

  • Week 1: Plants, Animals, and Insects (includes touching tadpoles, toads, turtles, and birds)

  • Week 2: Protecting the Susquehanna River

  • Week 3: Mankind and the Susquehanna River

  • Week 4: The Science and Geology of the Susquehanna River

  • Week 5: The Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay Watershed

• Cost: Children are free; accompanying adults are $15.

For the Dancers: City of Harrisburg "Street to Stage" Series

If you aren't looking for a full-day commitment but want your kids moving after dinner, the City’s Parks and Recreation department is running a great free weekly series at Reservoir Park.

• The Vibe: High-energy outdoor dance, hip-hop movement, and creative performance.

• The Details: Curated and taught by IN8 Dance, this series runs every Tuesday evening from July 7 through August 11 at the Reservoir Park Bandshell. It's broken down by age groups:

  • Ages 6–10: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

  • Ages 11–14: 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

• How to join: It’s a public community program, but you can RSVP and track updates directly via the City Parks & Rec Facebook Event Page.

Gamut Theatre Academy (GTA)

Located right downtown, Gamut Theatre runs a fantastic weekend theater academy for kids ages 5–18.

• The Vibe: Creative confidence, classic storytelling, and professional theater skills.

• The Program: GTA runs a 10-week session on Saturday mornings starting in mid-September. Classes are broken down by age and cover everything from creative dramatics and improvisation to formal acting technique and voice work.

• The Showcase: The semester wraps up with a final performance on Gamut’s main stage for family and friends.
